St. Augustine in St. Johns County has maintained a tourism industry dating back to the early twentieth century, which originated when St. Augustine became a favorite vacation spot for people during the winter. Standard Oil co-founder, Henry Flagler, had much to do with the establishment of St. Augustine as a center for tourism and vacationing. In 1988, he was instrumental in the construction of the Ponce De Leon Hotel. He was involved in the construction of two additional hotels and later these buildings would be used for other purposes. The Ponce De Leon is now part of Flagler College. Another popular tourist destination today is the Castillo de San Marcos, built by Spanish conquistadors in the seventeenth century.
