New York County District Attorney Charged With Record Clearing

Cyrus R. Vance, Jr serves as the 2014 District Attorney of New York County, which encompasses the borough of Manhattan. He is native to Manhattan and is the son of Former Secretary of State Cyrus Vance, Sr. Vance, Jr. received his undergraduate degree from Yale University and his Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center. In his early career, Vance worked as an Assistant District Attorney at the Manhattan District Attorney's Office and prosecuted offenders involved in organized crime, murder, corruption, and fraud. Later, Vance moved to Seattle, Washington to practice private law and teach part-time at Seattle University.

Vance chose to return to New York City in 2004 and joined the law firm Morvillo, Abramowitz, Grand, Isaon, Anello & Bohrer, P.C. Four years later Vance announced his desire to become District Attorney once Robert Morgenthau had chosen to retire. Vance ran in the election and eventually received Morgenthau's endorsement. Vance won the election and was sworn in January 2010.

Within the first few months in office, he made changes and created several new bureaus and units to bring the District Attorney's Office into the modern era. The bureaus and units he created include the Forensic Science/Cold Case Unit, Crime Strategies Unit, Major Economic Crimes Bureau, Cybercrime and Identity Theft Bureau, Special Victims Bureau, Hate Crimes Unit, Public Integrity unit, and the Criminal Enterprises Unit. Vance gained reelection in November 2013 and has succeeded at reducing crime in New York County significantly.
