More than $3,500 was awarded to law students from five different schools.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"image-frame\" style=\"float:left;margin-right:45px;margin-bottom:10px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.recordgone.com\/templates\/default\/images\/recordgone\/expungement-winners.png\" alt=\"Law student expungement essay competition winners\"><\/div>\n<p>The essays were judged by a diverse panel of judges, including attorney Mathew Higbee, an expert on criminal record expungement, Blake Perez, legislative affairs director for the Foundation for Continuing Justice, and Craig Kessler, the founder of BackgroundChecks.com.\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The goal of the contest is to support law students\u2019 educational pursuits while helping increase awareness of long-term impact a criminal record has and the importance of thoughtful laws governing topics as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.recordgone.com\/california\/expungement\/\" title=\"California exppungement\">criminal record expungement<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.recordgone.com\/california\/record-sealing\/\" title=\"California record sealing\">sealing<\/a> as well as the publicizing and utilization of criminal records.\n<\/p>\n<p>The contest, which was open to current law students, was designed to encourage research about the potential of criminal record expungement and record sealing laws in various states.   The entrants were asked to address one of three topics:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How to improve expungement related laws in (state of your choice)\n\t\t<\/li>\n<li>When, if ever, should government stop reporting criminal records to the public?\n\t\t<\/li>\n<li>What effects do criminal records have on former offenders ability to re-assimilate?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The Results of the Contest:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>First Place: $2,000.00<\/strong> &#8211; Kevin Hempy &#8211; Pepperdine Caruso School of Law <\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Essay: <a href=\"https:\/\/recordgone.com\/expungement-path-for-iowa.htm\n\">The Path Forward for Iowa<\/a> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><strong>Second Place: $1,000.00<\/strong> &#8211;  Kayley Berger &#8211; UC Irvine School of Law<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Essay: <a href=\"https:\/\/recordgone.com\/expand-california-automatic-expungement.htm\n\">Automating Expungement Should Be Provided For All Eligible Convictions Prior To January 1, 2021 in California<\/a>. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><strong>Third Place: $300.00<\/strong> &#8211; Cecilia Le &#8211; University of Oregon<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Essay: <a href=\"https:\/\/recordgone.com\/humane-treatment-of-people-with-criminal-records.htm\">3rd Annual Criminal record Policy Essay Competition and Scholarship<\/a> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><strong>Honorable Mention: $200 <\/strong> &#8211;  Ameya Gehi &#8211; University of Michigan Law School\n<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Essay: <a href=\"https:\/\/recordgone.com\/dealing-with-recidivism-united-states.htm\n\">Dealing with Recidivism in the United States<\/a>. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>About the Sponsors:<\/h3>\n<p>The Foundation for Continuing Justice is a non-profit law firm that provides assistance to former offenders looking to fully reintegrate into society and related policy research to lawmakers.
