In the early twentieth-first century, Tarrant County was home to many industrial factories that produced airplanes, helicopters, mobile homes, electronics, and plastics. In addition to these manufacturers, the Dallas-For Worth International Airport generates a great deal of revenue for Tarrant County, but most airport employees are subjected to a criminal background check before being hired.
Joe Shannon Jr. serves as the Criminal District Attorney of Tarrant County, Texas. Shannon received his bachelor's and law degree from the University of Texas. He began practicing law in 1963. From 1964 to 1971, however, Shannon shifted his focus to politics where he served on the Texas House of Representatives. Shannon first began working for the district attorney's office in 1972 but eventually returned to private practice.
In 1999, Shannon again began working at the district attorney's office and this time he was in charge of economic crimes. Governor Rick Perry appointed Shannon as District Attorney of Tarrant County in 2009 after the previous DA had passed away. Shannon is in charge of 164 attorneys with an additional support staff of about 160. The Tarrant County District Attorney's Office has a budget of $36 million and handles around 45,000 criminal cases each year.
In the fall of 2013, Shannon announced that instead of seeking re-election at the end of the term, he will retire stepping down at the start of 2015 after 51 years of practicing law. In March of 2014, District Judge Sharen Wilson won the GOP primary for the Tarrant County District Attorney with 59.4% of the vote.
